LOCAL INSIGHTS

Kakadu is one of the oldest cultural landscapes on Earth and is jointly managed by Traditional Owners and Parks Australia.

The Bininj/Mungguy and Jawoyn people have cared for this country for more than 65,000 years and their rock art tells stories that are still alive today.

Ubirr and Nourlangie contain some of the finest examples of Aboriginal rock art in Australia, with paintings dating back tens of thousands of years.

Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) is sacred to the Jawoyn people and features in many of their creation stories.

The East Alligator River forms a natural boundary between Kakadu and Arnhem Land and is home to healthy populations of saltwater crocodiles.

Edith Falls and Katherine Hot Springs are popular spots where locals and visitors alike come to cool off in natural waterholes.

The region’s wetlands support an incredible variety of birdlife, including the iconic jabiru and many migratory species.

Seasonal changes dramatically affect access – your guide’s local knowledge ensures you see the best of Kakadu at any time of year.

Carbon Footprint & Offset Report: Kakadu 3-Day Camping Adventure: Wetlands, Rock Art & Waterfalls

Quick Snapshot

Estimated CO₂e footprint per participant: 2,300 kg CO₂e
(higher-end conservative estimate – covers all on-tour impacts plus average travel to/from Darwin)

Our 200% offset commitment per booking: 4,600 kg CO₂e
Funded through genuine landscape restoration in climate-vulnerable developing regions (reforestation, mangroves, soil regeneration, etc.). This creates real net-positive impact beyond neutrality.

Tour summary

  • 3 days / 2 nights
  • Max 21 guests
  • Starts and ends Darwin CBD
  • Transport: air-conditioned 4WD mini-coach
  • 2 nights Jabiru Campground – permanent safari tents or bush swags (shared facilities)
  • Meals: 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 dinners (camp-style)
  • Highlights: Ubirr & Nourlangie rock art, Yellow Water sunrise cruise, seasonal waterfall swims (Maguk/Jim Jim), Litchfield termite mounds & falls, Indigenous ranger talks

Overview

This report estimates the carbon footprint for one individual participant on this tour using higher-end data from trusted sources. We intentionally choose upper-range figures to fully cover every impact – including hard-to-measure parts like supply chains and indirect effects.

We then double it (200%) and fund genuine landscape restoration projects in developing and climate-affected regions worldwide. This goes beyond standard offsetting to deliver real, lasting benefits for ecosystems and communities.

All figures in kg CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent – the standard measure that includes all greenhouse gases).

Tour Details

  • Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
  • Key locations: Darwin start/end, Kakadu (Ubirr, Nourlangie, Yellow Water, Maguk/Jim Jim), Litchfield National Park
  • Travel style: Camping adventure with rock art, wetlands cruise and waterfall swims
  • Assumptions: Average participant, standard behaviours, higher-impact choices where uncertain. Travel to/from Darwin is factored into the higher-end footprint for completeness.

Calculation Approach

  • Sources: UK DEFRA 2025 conversion factors, Australian National Greenhouse Accounts 2024, UNWTO tourism data, IPCC guidelines, and peer-reviewed studies.
  • Higher-end scale: Upper-range emission factors everywhere, plus radiative forcing for flights, well-to-tank fuel effects, +20% uncertainty buffer, and conservative assumptions for remote 4WD and camping operations.
  • Per person, full tour experience.
  • Excludes only purely personal extras (e.g. souvenirs or optional helicopter flights).

Detailed Emissions Breakdown (per participant)

Transportation1,450 kg CO₂e

  • Average travel to/from Darwin (higher-end domestic/international flights): 1,150 kg
  • On-tour 4WD mini-coach (~800 km): 300 kg – higher-end remote diesel factor

Accommodation160 kg CO₂e

  • 2 nights permanent safari tents/swags at Jabiru: 80 kg per night – higher-end for generator/water

Meals & Food90 kg CO₂e

  • 3 days camp-style meals: 30 kg per day – higher-impact estimate

Activities & Excursions600 kg CO₂e

  • Rock art walks, wetlands cruise, waterfall swims, Indigenous talks, Litchfield visits

TOTAL ESTIMATED FOOTPRINT PER PERSON: 2,300 kg CO₂e (rounded higher for full coverage)

Our 200% Offset Commitment

  • Amount we will offset:2 × 2,300 kg = 4,600 kg CO₂e per individual booking
  • How: Direct funding of landscape restoration projects – reforestation, mangrove protection, regenerative agriculture, wetland and soil carbon restoration
  • Where: Developing countries and regions most affected by climate change (e.g. Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America) for maximum global benefit and community co-benefits
  • Why 200% and higher-end estimates: To guarantee coverage despite any measurement discrepancies and to create genuine extra positive impact

Important Notes

  • Numbers are deliberately conservative (higher) so we over-deliver on restoration – real footprint may be lower
  • The tour already has strong sustainability practices; our independent higher-end analysis adds extra certainty
  • Carbon accounting has natural uncertainties – doubling it is the responsible way
  • This directly supports long-term carbon-sequestering landscapes and local communities
