LOCAL INSIGHTS

Kakadu National Park is one of the world’s great cultural landscapes and has been home to Bininj and Mungguy people for over 65,000 years.

Ubirr and Nourlangie contain some of the finest examples of ancient Aboriginal rock art still visible today.

The Mary River Wetlands are part of the largest Ramsar-listed wetland system in the Northern Territory and teem with birdlife and crocodiles.

Litchfield National Park is famous for its magnetic termite mounds that align north-south and its easily accessible waterfalls and plunge pools.

Jabiru is the main service town inside Kakadu and the base for many of the park’s walking tracks and cultural sites.

The dry season from April to October brings clear skies, lower humidity and reliable access to all the major attractions on this route.

Traditional Owners still actively care for this country and many rock art sites are only accessible with respect for ongoing cultural protocols.

The landscape changes dramatically with the seasons – the tour is timed for the best conditions but guides remain flexible with weather and water levels.

Local wildlife includes abundant birds, wallabies, goannas and the chance to see crocodiles safely from the boat or viewing platforms.

Carbon Footprint & Offset Report: Kakadu 3-Day Camping Adventure: Wetlands, Rock Art & Waterfalls

Quick Snapshot

Estimated CO₂e footprint per participant: 2,300 kg CO₂e
(higher-end conservative estimate – covers all on-tour impacts plus average travel to/from Darwin)

Our 200% offset commitment per booking: 4,600 kg CO₂e
Funded through genuine landscape restoration in climate-vulnerable developing regions (reforestation, mangroves, soil regeneration, etc.). This creates real net-positive impact beyond neutrality.

Tour summary

  • 3 days / 2 nights
  • Max 21 guests
  • Starts and ends Darwin CBD (6:30am Day 1 – 7:00pm Day 3)
  • Air-conditioned 4WD mini-coach (~1,070 km total driving)
  • 2 nights at Jabiru Campground – permanent safari tents (twin-share) or bush swags (shared facilities)
  • Meals: 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 camp-style dinners (participatory)

Overview

This report estimates the carbon footprint for one individual participant on this tour using higher-end data from trusted sources. We intentionally choose upper-range figures to fully cover every impact – including hard-to-measure parts like supply chains and indirect effects.

We then double it (200%) and fund genuine landscape restoration projects in developing and climate-affected regions worldwide. This goes beyond standard offsetting to deliver real, lasting benefits for ecosystems and communities.

All figures in kg CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent – the standard measure that includes all greenhouse gases).

Tour Details

  • Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
  • Key locations: Darwin start/end, Mary River Wetlands, Kakadu (Ubirr, Nourlangie/Burrungkuy, Cahills Crossing, seasonal waterfalls), Litchfield National Park (termite mounds, Florence/Buley/Wangi Falls)
  • Travel style: Active small-group camping safari with guided walks and wildlife focus
  • Assumptions: Average participant, standard behaviours, higher-impact choices where uncertain. Travel to/from Darwin is factored into the higher-end footprint for completeness.

Calculation Approach

  • Sources: UK DEFRA 2025 conversion factors, Australian National Greenhouse Accounts 2024, UNWTO tourism data, IPCC guidelines, and peer-reviewed studies.
  • Higher-end scale: Upper-range emission factors everywhere, plus radiative forcing for flights, well-to-tank fuel effects, +20% uncertainty buffer, and conservative assumptions for remote 4WD and camping operations.
  • Per person, full tour experience.
  • Excludes only purely personal extras (e.g. souvenirs or optional helicopter flights).

Detailed Emissions Breakdown (per participant)

Transportation1,450 kg CO₂e

  • Average travel to/from Darwin (higher-end domestic/international flights): 1,150 kg
  • On-tour 4WD mini-coach (~1,070 km shared): 300 kg – higher-end remote diesel factor

Accommodation160 kg CO₂e

  • 2 nights permanent safari tents/swags at Jabiru Campground: 80 kg per night – higher-end for generator, water and shared facilities

Meals & Food90 kg CO₂e

  • 3 days of camp-style meals (participatory): 30 kg per day – higher-impact estimate

Activities & Excursions600 kg CO₂e

  • Guided rock art walks, Yellow Water cruise, seasonal waterfall swims, Litchfield visits, Indigenous ranger talks and interpretation

TOTAL ESTIMATED FOOTPRINT PER PERSON: 2,300 kg CO₂e

Our 200% Offset Commitment

  • Amount we will offset:2 × 2,300 kg = 4,600 kg CO₂e per individual booking
  • How: Direct funding of landscape restoration projects – reforestation, mangrove protection, regenerative agriculture, wetland and soil carbon restoration
  • Where: Developing countries and regions most affected by climate change (e.g. Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America) for maximum global benefit and community co-benefits
  • Why 200% and higher-end estimates: To guarantee coverage despite any measurement discrepancies and to create genuine extra positive impact

Important Notes

  • Numbers are deliberately conservative (higher) so we over-deliver on restoration – real footprint may be lower
  • The tour already has strong sustainability practices; our independent higher-end analysis adds extra certainty
  • Carbon accounting has natural uncertainties – doubling it is the responsible way
  • This directly supports long-term carbon-sequestering landscapes and local communities
