Carbon Footprint & Offset Report: 10-Day Eyre Peninsula, West Coast & Outback SA Small Group 4WD/ATV Eco Tour

Quick Snapshot

Estimated CO₂e footprint per participant: 2,950 kg CO₂e
(higher-end conservative estimate – covers all on-tour impacts plus average travel to/from Adelaide)

Our 200% offset commitment per booking: 5,900 kg CO₂e
Funded through genuine landscape restoration in climate-vulnerable developing regions (reforestation, mangroves, soil regeneration, etc.). This creates real net-positive impact beyond neutrality.

Tour summary

  • 10 days / 9 nights
  • Small group 2–12 people
  • Starts and ends in Adelaide CBD (hotel pick-up/return or Central Bus Station)
  • Small group 4WD/ATV eco safari (~2,000 km total driving via coastal roads, Eyre Highway, remote tracks; includes midday Spencer Gulf Sea Road ferry on Day 9)
  • 9 nights varied accommodation (motel units, holiday parks, e.g. Augusta Westside Motel, Port Lincoln Hotel, Coffin Bay Discovery Park, Streaky Bay Foreshore Discovery Park, Wudinna Hotel Motel, Point Turton Holiday Park)
  • Meals: Continental breakfasts, picnic/café/bakery lunches, dinners at pubs/restaurants or barbecues (some at own expense)
  • Highlights: Scenic coastal drives, national park visits (Lincoln NP, Gawler Ranges NP), oyster farm tours/tastings, wildlife spotting (sea lions, dolphins, kangaroos), beach fishing, optional boat cruises, silo art, ancient rock formations

Overview

This report estimates the carbon footprint for one individual participant on this tour using higher-end data from trusted sources. We intentionally choose upper-range figures to fully cover every impact – including hard-to-measure parts like supply chains and indirect effects.

We then double it (200%) and fund genuine landscape restoration projects in developing and climate-affected regions worldwide. This goes beyond standard offsetting to deliver real, lasting benefits for ecosystems and communities.

All figures in kg CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent – the standard measure that includes all greenhouse gases).

Tour Details

  • Duration: 10 days / 9 nights
  • Key locations: Adelaide start/end → Port Augusta → Whyalla → Cowell → Tumby Bay → Port Neil → Port Lincoln → Coffin Bay → Elliston → Streaky Bay → Smoky Bay → Gawler Ranges NP → Wudinna → Lucky Bay Jetty → Franklin Harbour (ferry) → Wallaroo → Barley Stacks Winery → Point Turton → Corny Point → Berry Bay → South Hummocks Range
  • Travel style: Small-group eco-safari with scenic drives, short walks, wildlife and cultural experiences (runs 1st Thursday monthly or on demand; summer adjustments for heat)
  • Assumptions: Average participant, standard behaviours, higher-impact choices where uncertain. Travel to/from Adelaide is factored into the higher-end footprint for completeness.

Calculation Approach

  • Sources: UK DEFRA 2025 conversion factors, Australian National Greenhouse Accounts 2024, UNWTO tourism data, IPCC guidelines, and peer-reviewed studies.
  • Higher-end scale: Upper-range emission factors everywhere, plus well-to-tank fuel effects, +20% uncertainty buffer, and conservative assumptions for remote South Australian 4WD/ATV operations.
  • Per person, full tour experience.
  • Excludes only purely personal extras (e.g. souvenirs or optional boat cruises).

Detailed Emissions Breakdown (per participant)

Transportation1,450 kg CO₂e

  • Average travel to/from Adelaide (higher-end domestic/international flights): 1,100 kg – upper short/medium-haul factors with full radiative forcing multiplier
  • All on-tour small group 4WD/ATV transfers (~2,000 km total, shared): 300 kg – higher-end remote diesel factor with realistic occupancy
  • Spencer Gulf Sea Road ferry (Day 9): 50 kg – higher-end marine factor

Accommodation630 kg CO₂e

  • 9 nights varied remote motels/holiday parks: 70 kg per night – higher-end for off-grid/regional energy, water, and facilities

Meals & Food300 kg CO₂e

  • 10 days of included breakfasts/lunches/dinners (picnics, barbecues, local produce) + own meals: 30 kg per day – higher-impact tourism diet including production, transport, waste

Activities & Excursions570 kg CO₂e

  • Scenic coastal drives, national park visits (Lincoln NP, Gawler Ranges NP), oyster tastings, wildlife spotting, beach fishing, silo art, ancient formations, cultural sites, national park entries

TOTAL ESTIMATED FOOTPRINT PER PERSON: 2,950 kg CO₂e

Our 200% Offset Commitment

  • Amount we will offset:2 × 2,950 kg = 5,900 kg CO₂e per individual booking
  • How: Direct funding of landscape restoration projects – reforestation, mangrove protection, regenerative agriculture, wetland and soil carbon restoration
  • Where: Developing countries and regions most affected by climate change (e.g. Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America) for maximum global benefit and community co-benefits
  • Why 200% and higher-end estimates: To guarantee coverage despite any measurement discrepancies and to create genuine extra positive impact

Important Notes

  • Numbers are deliberately conservative (higher) so we over-deliver on restoration – real footprint may be lower
  • The tour already has strong sustainability practices; our independent higher-end analysis adds extra certainty
  • Carbon accounting has natural uncertainties – doubling it is the responsible way
  • This directly supports long-term carbon-sequestering landscapes and local communities
