LOCAL INSIGHTS

The Daintree Rainforest is part of the oldest continuous tropical rainforest on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners have cared for this land for tens of thousands of years and share their knowledge on the Mossman Gorge experience.

Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef – one of the few places in the world where two World Heritage areas touch.

Cassowaries – large flightless birds – are often spotted in the Cape Tribulation area and play a vital role in seed dispersal.

Mossman Gorge features crystal-clear waters and ancient rainforest that feels almost prehistoric.

Port Douglas is a relaxed beach town that still retains its laid-back Queensland character despite its popularity.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is the world’s longest gondola ride and offers a unique canopy-level perspective.

The Daintree River is home to saltwater crocodiles and a rich variety of birds and marine life you’ll see on the eco-cruise.

Local driver-guides know every bend in the road and can adjust the day based on weather and wildlife sightings.

Our 200% offset commitment per booking: 580 kg CO₂e
Funded through genuine landscape restoration in climate-vulnerable developing regions (reforestation, mangroves, soil regeneration, etc.). This creates real net-positive impact beyond neutrality.

Overview

This report estimates the carbon footprint for one individual participant on this tour using higher-end data from trusted sources. We intentionally choose upper-range figures to fully cover every impact – including hard-to-measure parts like supply chains and indirect effects.

We then double it (200%) and fund genuine landscape restoration projects in developing and climate-affected regions worldwide. This goes beyond standard offsetting to deliver real, lasting benefits for ecosystems and communities.

All figures in kg CO₂e (carbon dioxide equivalent – the standard measure that includes all greenhouse gases).

Tour Details

  • Duration: 3 days / 2 nights
  • Key locations: Cairns start/end, Skyrail to Kuranda, Port Douglas, Mossman Gorge, Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation, Daintree River
  • Travel style: Boutique small-group eco-tour with cableway, guided rainforest walks, cultural immersion and solar-powered river cruise
  • Assumptions: Average participant, standard behaviours, higher-impact choices where uncertain. Local travel to Cairns pickup point is factored into the higher-end footprint for completeness. Easy fitness level required (mobile, unaided walking; options for shorter walks).

Calculation Approach

  • Sources: UK DEFRA 2025 conversion factors, Australian National Greenhouse Accounts 2024, UNWTO tourism data, IPCC guidelines, and peer-reviewed studies.
  • Higher-end scale: Upper-range emission factors everywhere, plus well-to-tank fuel effects, +20% uncertainty buffer, and conservative assumptions for private small-group vehicle, Skyrail cableway and solar boat operations in World Heritage areas.
  • Per person, full tour experience.
  • Excludes only purely personal extras (e.g. souvenirs, optional activities or dinners).

Detailed Emissions Breakdown (per participant)

Transportation95 kg CO₂e

  • Average local travel to/from Cairns pickup point (higher-end mix of car, taxi or short transfers): 25 kg
  • All on-tour private small-group vehicle (~285 km total) + Skyrail cableway + solar-powered Daintree River boat: 70 kg – higher-end factors with low-occupancy buffer

Accommodation110 kg CO₂e

  • 2 nights at Paradise Links Resort or similar in Port Douglas (air-conditioned ensuite): 55 kg per night – higher-end for tropical resort energy, water and laundry

Meals & Food55 kg CO₂e

  • 3 days of included breakfasts/lunches + own dinners/snacks (tourism-level portions and waste): ~18 kg per day – higher-impact estimate

Activities & Excursions30 kg CO₂e

  • Skyrail ride, guided rainforest & gorge walks (up to 9.5 km total with shorter options), Kuku Yalanji cultural experience, solar boat cruise, national park entries and interpretation

TOTAL ESTIMATED FOOTPRINT PER PERSON: 290 kg CO₂e

Our 200% Offset Commitment

  • Amount we will offset:2 × 290 kg = 580 kg CO₂e per individual booking
  • How: Direct funding of landscape restoration projects – reforestation, mangrove protection, regenerative agriculture, wetland and soil carbon restoration
  • Where: Developing countries and regions most affected by climate change (e.g. Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America) for maximum global benefit and community co-benefits
  • Why 200% and higher-end estimates: To guarantee coverage despite any measurement discrepancies and to create genuine extra positive impact

Important Notes

  • Numbers are deliberately conservative (higher) so we over-deliver on restoration – real footprint may be lower
  • The tour already has strong sustainability practices (solar-powered boat, World Heritage focus, minimal impact guidelines, respect for Traditional Owners, refillable water bottle provided, stay on designated tracks, no feeding wildlife); our independent higher-end analysis adds extra certainty
  • Carbon accounting has natural uncertainties – doubling it is the responsible way
  • This directly supports long-term carbon-sequestering landscapes and local communities
